چکیده

Network Function Virtualization has emerged as an operator proposal for offering network services with network functions implemented in software, which may be located in Data Centers, network nodes or even in a virtual machine. NFV is theoretically applicable to any network function and aims at simplifying the management of heterogeneous hardware platforms. Using as a basis one of the network functions offered by network routers, this thesis presents the analysis, design, and the first implementation, in a virtualized manner, of the routing function. Considering the current co-existence of IPv4 and IPv6 and the possibilities brought into the arena by OpenFlow-enabled infrastructures, the thesis describes the design of the virtualized routing protocol, enabling a simple management and avoiding signaling messages overhead in the control plane level, and the different scenarios considered to validate the virtualized function. In essence, the thesis describes one of the first implementations of the functional NFV concept, through the virtualization of the routing function over an OpenFlow network. The different scenarios validated in this thesis are used to demonstrate the applicability of the NFV-powered implementation proposed into actual production environments.

Master Thesis Seamless Distributed Mobility Management (dmm) Solution in Cloud Based Lte Systems

Distributed Mobility Management (DMM) refers to a set of solutions developed to overcome the limitations posed by currently deployed centralized mobility management schemes. DMM offers to operators a more efficient network deployment driven by a distributed placement of core network entities close to the edge (access) of the network. The huge appreciation received by Cloud Computing technologie...

Service Characterization for Virtual Routers

In the past decade the virtualization paradigm has been remarkably successful in the server domain, and significant benefits are expected from the virtualization of network resources. However, to date the virtualization capabilities of proprietary systems remain limited while the impact of executing open software routers within system virtualization platforms has not been fully investigated. In...

OFELIA - Pan-European Test Facility for OpenFlow Experimentation

The demonstration will show the live access to the control framework of a pan-European OpenFlow testbed. The testbed spans ve islands all over Europe, allowing experimenters access not only to virtual machines but to the switches interconnecting them. This extends the control of networking experiments beyond best-e ort overlays to a real control of the network, its routing and forwarding functi...

Adaptive Video Streaming over OpenFlow Networks with Quality of Service

Multimedia streaming applications have stringent Quality of Service (QoS) requirements which cannot be always met by the best-effort Internet. To provide QoS, several QoS architectures have been explored over last two decades, but none of them has been truly successful and globally implemented. This thesis presents a novel QoS architecture for multimedia streaming based on OpenFlow, a Software ...

Applying SDN/OpenFlow in Virtualized LTE to Support Distributed Mobility Management (DMM)

Distributed Mobility Management (DMM) is a mobility management solution, where the mobility anchors are distributed instead of being centralized. The use of DMM can be applied in cloud-based (virtualized) Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile network environments to (1) provide session continuity to users across personal, local, and wide area networks without interruption and (2) support traffic red...
